The funeral procession-like march of opener The Shooting Star showed that this would be a very different record than what had come before. ![]() Written in tribute to the Duplantiers’ late mother, Magma is where Gojira really stepped into a more sombre and achingly melodic realm. From jaw-harp-assisted Sepultura homage Amazonia to The Chant’s stacked harmonies and mid-tempo balladry, this is the sound of a band reaching beyond the boundaries of the metal scene without ever disconnecting from their roots. Everything works immediately, even when it shouldn’t have. Here, Gojira channelled Magma’s experimentalism into what can only be described as The Fucking Hit Factory. The five year gap that followed 2016’s Magma only served to ratchet up the expectation for a follow-up, and Fortitude delivered.
